Mask of Zion
Mysterious West Bank Shootings:
Random Murders Or Assassinations?
by Jonathan Azaziah

The occupied West Bank is run like a ghetto prison, identical to the besieged Gaza Strip excluding the all-out Israeli siege. It is governed by the dictator-like regime of ‘President’ of the Palestinian Authority (PA) Mahmoud Abbas, whose presidency ended in January 2009 (1), and ‘Prime Minister’ Salam Fayyad, who is unelected and totally backed by the Zionist-occupied governments of the Western world for his mythical (as in myth, for it doesn’t exist) ‘state building,’ a farcical sideshow which has cloaked his theft of Palestine’s wealth and natural resources by establishing neoliberal economics and corporate privatization through a firm of wealthy House Arabs known as PADICO (2).
Because of these criminal policies, one out of every four Palestinians in the occupied West Bank is out of work, and the population is losing nearly 3% off of its wages every year (3). And in Area C of the West Bank, which represents 60% of the territory and is under direct Zionist military control, the poverty is even worse than occupied Gaza (4). This atmosphere of degradation and depravation is reinforced through sustained collaboration known as ‘security coordination’ between the PA’s militias and the Zionist entity’s occupation military. This collaboration includes torturing anyone who rebels against the authoritarianism of the Abbas-Fayyad regime, carrying out targeted killings of Resistance members, murdering civilians to generate widespread fear and subservience to the quasi-dictatorship and working closely with foreign intelligence agencies like MI-6 (5).
There is nothing filthier, nothing more demeaning, nothing more detrimental to one’s dignity than working against one’s own people for the benefit of the enemy. And the Palestinian Authority represents the very essence of these three qualities of sedition.
It is this sedition that was on full display on April 4th, nine years to the day of the beginnings of the horrific, inhuman Jenin Refugee Camp massacre carried out by the Zionist entity over a period of 13 days. Internationally renowned activist, actor and director Juliano Mer-Khamis was gunned down in front of his wife and 10-month old son right outside of his Freedom Theater in occupied Jenin. The Zionist media, typically and vilely, reported the killing as the work of ‘masked Palestinian militants.’ The PA began an ‘investigation’ of the brutal murder and even apprehended a suspect, Mujahed Qaniri. Qaniri however, vehemently contended the allegation and denied any involvement in the heinous act. He was released soon after his detention once a DNA test vindicated him and affirmed his contention (6).
No lengthy duration was needed for the revelations to emerge. The murderers of Juliano were not ‘masked Palestinian militants’ but masked Israeli soldiers, the elite Mistaravim unit known as the Duvdevan. Juliano had been murdered by Duvdevan in a high-level intelligence operation, intimately attached to a greater, global intelligence agenda of the Zionist entity. The PA cleaned up the usurping regime’s mess by staging a false investigation and deposing of all of the evidence. To their praiseworthy and honorable credit, many of those closest to Juliano and several activist committees slammed Zionism as the culprit behind the murder (7).
Though the Abbas-Fayyad security apparatus eradicated much of the evidence of Israeli military intelligence plotting, it hasn’t been able to eradicate the voices of the people; Juliano’s loved ones, comrades, proteges and colleagues throughout the occupied West Bank aren’t simply demanding that the killers be brought to justice, they are petitioning, protesting and calling for real protection of the Freedom Theater and Juliano’s legacy (8).
The assassination of Juliano Mer-Khamis, the incessant, booming outcries for justice after his passing and the PA’s ongoing cleanup operation at the Zionist entity’s behest are at the core of the bizarre happenings in the West Bank in the month of May. On May 6th, 30-year old Muhammad Yahya Khawaldah was shot to death in the refugee camp of al-Jalazun, not too far from Ramallah. Two weeks later, 32-year-old Omar Hussein Abu Halou was shot to death in occupied Nablus. On May 28th, 52-year old Ramadan Omar Salhab was shot three times and succumbed to his wounds in occupied Jericho.
To this date, there still has not been a single suspect detained in any case. Why? Because in every instance, the murderers were masked. This, all by its lonesome, is enough to raise eyebrows in regards to the mysterious shootings. However, there is something else, something ominous that invalidates the appearance of randomness and certainly gives validation to the appearance of assassination. All three of these Palestinian men, had previously worked for Israeli intelligence as full-blown spies or assets (9). The locations of their residences (and their assassinations), Nablus, Ramallah and Jericho, were all frequented by Juliano Mer-Khamis in his humanitarian work as an activist, and were also sights of commemoration after he was gunned down in Jenin.
It appears, that these men were intelligence assets in the joint operation between Israeli occupation forces’ Duvdevan unit and the Palestinian Authority’s security forces to assassinate Juliano Mer-Khamis. It appears, that these men provided vital reconnaissance to Duvdevan to keep tabs on Juliano Mer-Khamis and document the patterns of his whereabouts in the occupied West Bank, therefore ensuring a ‘successful’ operation through the utilization of the element of surprise. Hence, why Juliano Mer-Khamis was gunned down in a moment, in a place he felt most secure: in front of the Freedom Theater, with his wife and child.
It appears, that these men then spoonfed a false suspect to the PA to seal the deal on the cover up. When the suspect fizzled out however, the Zionist masters of the collaborationist PA were not pleased. And it would appear, that out of this displeasure, that these men were eliminated by Duvdevan, which has dominion over the West Bank, to prevent them from revealing the operation to any institution of media and to remind them, that their services were no longer needed. The circumstantial evidence is powerful. The Israeli elephant in the room is the manner in which these men were killed: exactly like Juliano Mer-Khamis was killed by the Duvdevan unit.
The Zionist entity has locked up the daughter of the former Deputy Head of Mossad for refusing to serve in IOF (10). The Zionist entity routinely tear gases and brutalizes Israeli solidarity activists at weekly protests in the occupied Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh (11). The Zionist entity’s Mossad assassinated British media tycoon, Zionist extremist, Katsa (Mossad officer) and major asset to the usurping Israeli regime Robert Maxwell in the Canary Islands for his attempts at extorting and blackmailing the agency (12).
And the Zionist entity’s Shin Bet assassinated Israeli Prime Minister (and Zionist terrorist who served in the Palmach and Haganah) Yitzhak Rabin in one of its most daring operations, all for the sake of furthering the expansionist agenda and confiscation of Palestinian land (13). If Israel would kill ‘its own’ for going against its agenda, or to further its agenda, it would be naive, childish and asinine to think that it wouldn’t do the same to Palestinian collaborators.
What is most tragic of all regarding the deaths of these Arab assets of Zionism, is that they most likely held the keys to the doors which would unlock the inner secrets of Juliano Mer-Khamis’s assassination. Though it is known that the IOF elite Duvdevan death squad killed Juliano and why it pulled the trigger, some integral questions remain: when was the plot hatched? Who gave the direct order? Are there hits already in place for Juliano’s family, as there are with Mossad-abducted Gaza engineer Dirar Abu Sisi (14)? Unfortunately, the answers to these inquires, and many more, died with Muhammad Yahya Khawaldah, Omar Hussein Abu Halou and Ramadan Omar Salhab.
A Final Comment: Activists Beware of ‘Reconciliation’
Juliano Mer-Khamis was not the first activist to be murdered (or severely wounded) by the Zionist entity with Abbas-Fayyad complicity/direct assistance in the occupied West Bank and sadly, he will not be the last. Iain John Hook, Jawaher Abu Rahmah, Brian Avery, Bassem Abu Rahmah, Tristan Anderson and Emily Henochowicz were brutalized or killed before Juliano (15), and the memory of these brave souls serves as an everyday reminder to what the unity between occupier and collaborator brings forth.
The recent ‘reconciliation’ deal processed by the highest ranking officials from the Fatah-controlled PA and Hamas has been revealed not only as a sham due to the continuance of Israel-PA ‘security coordination’, but as a defeat of Hamas at the hands of the Zionist entity after multiple assaults on the illegally besieged Gaza Strip (16). Hamas officials have been uncharacteristically quiet about the deal, but it is understandable. Just prior to Operation Cast Lead, Hamas leader Khaled Mish’al was calling Mahmoud Abbas an ‘illegal president;’ he called the PA an organization that ‘stifles Resistance;’ he declared that the PA ‘provides free services to the Israelis’ and he demanded prosecution for its officials (17). Right on all counts. But now, Mish’al and Abbas are behaving like long lost brothers and it is nothing short of disgraceful.
Wafsi Qabha on the other hand, Gaza political official and former Minister of Detainees, has had the courage to speak out against the fraudulent reconciliation deal. He’s stated with no qualms, ‘there are no real indications of reconciliation in the occupied West Bank.’ Qabha continued, ‘PA security forces are still interrogating Hamas supporters and members.’ Qabha also noted, that despite (hollow) promises from the PA, at least 35 Hamas officials and fighters remain imprisoned in the torturous dungeons of Fatah (18).
The EU-US-backed PA considers anyone that stands against its criminal rule a ‘Hamas supporter,’ including political analysts, religious figures, civilians and activists. This totalitarian approach was on perfect display for Nakba Day 2011, as Fatah militias violently dispersed a demonstration in al-Zawia Square of occupied al-Khalil. Activists and students, including women, were severely beaten and cameras and phones were confiscated to prevent any reporting of the collaborationist barbarity (19).
The Zionist entity’s new clandestine war on Palestine (Operation Phantasmagoria) has not only been initiated to crush indigenous Resistance, deepen its foothold through ethnic cleansing and occupation and whitewash all of its crimes in the eyes of the war criminal-infested ‘international community,’ but to disrupt the international solidarity network that is so dedicated to Palestinian liberation and self-determination. The Zionist entity is aiming to create the kind of atmosphere, where activists will not only feel threatened by the Israeli occupation, but Palestinians themselves and their communities via the brutality of Zionism’s donkeys and lapdogs, the PA, being portrayed as representative of the people. Setting aside the PA’s collaborator identity, this is immersed in baselessness and coated with racism, xenophobia and orientalism. Nobody in possession of a mildly sound, thinking mind is falling for this hasbara. But activists beware, you are being targeted. Again. Now, more than ever.
Truths of Mexico
The History of Mexico Drug TraffickingThe United States has assisted the Mexican government in its counternarcotics efforts since 1973, providing about $350 million in aid. Since the later 1980s, U.S. assistance has centered on developing and supporting Mexican law enforcement efforts to stop the flow of cocaine from Colombia, the world's largest supplier, into Mexico and onward to the United States.
Between fiscal years 1996 and 1997, the State Department provided about $11 million to support Mexican law enforcement efforts and plans to provide another $5 million in fiscal year 1998.
In January 1993, the government of Mexico initiated a new drug policy under which it declined U.S. counternarcotics assistance and assumed responsibility for funding its own counternarcotics efforts. This policy remained in effect until 1995 when, according to the State Department, economic conditions and the growing drug-trafficking threat prompted the Mexican government to again begin accepting U.S. counternarcotics assistance for law enforcement organizations.
Among other things, the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended, requires the President to certify annually that major drug-producing and -transit countries are fully cooperating with the United States in their counternarcotics efforts. As part of this process, the United States has established specific objectives for evaluating the performance of these countries. In 1997, the United States set the following objectives for evaluating Mexico's counternarcotics cooperation as part of the 1998 certification process:
(1) reducing the flow of drugs into the United States from Mexico,
(2) disrupting and dismantling narco-trafficking organizations,
(3) bringing fugitives to justice,
(4) making progress in criminal justice and anticorruption reform,
(5) improving money laundering and chemical diversion control, and
(6) continuing improvement in cooperating with the United States.
In February 1998, the President certified Mexico as fully cooperating with the United States.
Without measures of effectiveness, it is difficult for U.S. decisionmakers to evaluate the progress that the United States and Mexico are making to reduce the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. We have previously noted the need for ONDCP to develop drug control plans that include performance measures to allow it to assess the effectiveness of antidrug programs.
The United States and Mexico issued a joint U.S.-Mexico binational drug strategy in February 1998. Although the binational strategy is indicative of increased U.S.-Mexico cooperation, it does not contain critical performance measures and milestones for assessing performance.

The History of US-Mexico Marijuana Trafficking
The most important illegal plants cultivated in Mexico were poppy and marijuana. Coca plantations did not exist. For many decades opium trafficking was the main source of Mexican traffickers' revenues, the source of their primary accumulation. In the state of Sinaloa, people invented a special word, gomero, for opium traffickers. As David Musto says, even though there were some marijuana users in the thirties in the U.S.A., it was not until the sixties that marijuana consumption was generalised. The American authorities, especially Harry J. Anslinger, Chief of the Bureau of Narcotic Drugs (BND), were concerned about marijuana use in the U.S. There was a sort of marijuana hysteria in the media to which Anslinger contributed. The Marijuana Tax Act, to control the transportation and selling of the plant, was approved in 1937.
In the thirties, marijuana production could be counted already in tons in states like Puebla, Guerrero and Tlaxcala, and some of the alleged owners of the crops living in Mexico City, such as "Lola la Chata", were suspected of being protected by high ranking members of the anti-narcotics police. At the same time, drug traffickers from the north-western region were making fortunes out of opium smuggling, developing their routes through Nogales, Mexicali, Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez. In Coahuila, according to the investigation report sent by special agent Juan Requena to the Mexican Department of Public Health, the most important opium trafficker, the Chinese Antonio Wong Yin, was a compadre of governor Nazario Ortiz Garza. Others were in close touch with general Jesús García Gutiérrez, who was in charge of military operations in the state. Similar situations were reported in a less precise way about governors from Baja California and Chihuahua. Doctor and General José Siurob, the Department of Public Health Chief, recognised in 1937 that anti-narcotic agents used to be paid with the drug they seized. Once, he said, a governor sent some cans of opium to his office, but when they were opened they contained only tar. There were obviously different levels of perception about the need to control drug trafficking and the seriousness of the drug control politics.
A political scandal of unknown proportions exploded in 1947 when General Pablo Macías Valenzuela, ex-Secretary of War and Navy and governor of the state of Sinaloa (1945-1950), was suspected of leading a drug trafficking ring or protecting the opium traffickers. The information was published by national newspapers such as Excélsior and El Universal. According to Jesús Lazcano Ochoa, Attorney General of Sinaloa in Valenzuela's government, the governor had never even seen opium in his life until he showed him some samples seized from the traffickers. The Attorney General added that the accusations were inventions of his political enemies who also suspected him of having masterminded the assassination of his predecessor, Col. Rodolfo T. Loaiza (1941-1944), from the Lázaro Cárdenas group. The scandal cooled off after a private meeting with president Miguel Alemán, when he was on an official visit in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, six days after the first note appeared in the press against Valenzuela. The governor finished his term and became Commander of the 1st Military Zone (1951-1956). It was the first time the drug trafficking issue was used publicly and politically by one power elite group against another.
US-Mexico Marijuana Traficking
In 1947, the year the CIA was founded, President Alemán created the Security Federal Agency (Dirección Federal de Seguridad-DFS), a kind of President's political police, also with the power of intervention in drug issues. That same year, drug policy, traditionally an attribution of the Department of Health, was transferred to the Attorney General's Office (Procuraduría General de la República-PGR). Reports from the American Embassy in Mexico to the Department of State in Washington remarked on the unreliable backgrounds of the people put at the head of the DFS, suspected of being involved or controlling drug trafficking. Among them, Senator (Distrito Federal) and Colonel Carlos I. Serrano, the real chief and brain behind the scenes, close friend of President Alemán.
Marijuana Traffickers and Politicians
It is important to note that, since the beginning of the drug business, the best known drug traffickers in Mexico were related in special official reports in Mexico and the U.S.A. to high ranking politicians. More precisely, these politicians were suspected of being directly involved in the illegal trade and even of controlling it. In that scenario, free-lancers or outsiders would not have any chances to build up their own networks and succeed in their efforts. The political system emerged after the Mexican revolution was a state party system, a social pyramid with the President at the top, concentrating powers over the legislative and the judicial branches. Governors' fidelity - most of them military officers formed on the battlefields - was in many cases assured in exchange of a certain liberty to do any kind of business. The limits were the President's will, their own entrepreneurial capacity, and their ethical dispositions. In that context, drug trafficking was just another profitable business that could be achieved by powerful members of the "revolutionary family", because of the political positions occupied by some of them at a given moment. Controlled, tolerated or regulated by mighty politicians in northern states, drug trafficking seems to have been a business that was developed from within the power structure, and drug traffickers do not give the impression of having emerged as an early autonomous specialised social group, but rather as a new class of outlaws that depended closely on political and police protection and was banned from political activity, according to recent U.S.A. and Mexican archives and newspaper archives investigations.
Since the prohibition years in the twenties until 1947, governors from northern states where illicit plants were cultivated seem to have had an important and sometimes direct role in controlling drug trafficking and traffickers. After 1947, the DFS and the Federal Judicial Police (Policía Judicial Federal-PJF, depending on the PGR) as well as the army, became, more than before, the institutions responsible for fighting against the forbidden trade. Imputations on governors were transmuted into indictments against members of those institutions, protecting governors from an eventual political pressure because of drug affairs and leaving police agents and the military assuming the consequences of the dangerous and structural liaisons with drug traffickers. In a way, this new structure created an institutional mediation between drug traffickers and the political powers, groups who previously had a direct line of communication. On one hand, the drug business grew very quickly during the war years and did not stop in the aftermath. More social agents belonging to the power structure placed in strategic positions where business was booming had the possibility of making quick and easy profits, and so they did. But, on the other hand, police agents and the military also had the role of preventing drug traffickers from becoming completely autonomous or getting so wild as to go beyond certain limits of socially and historically tolerated violence. As long as the outlaws were politically controlled, federal agents could get a piece of the cake, not so big as to become autonomous themselves, and certainly not without sharing profits with their superiors in the political structure. That was the rule in order to secure impunity.
Drug Trafficking Organizations
When opium was prohibited in the U.S.A. it was legal in Mexico. Social agents who commercialised it were criminals on one side of the border and legitimate traders on the other. The circle was completed when Mexico adopted similar laws. A new social category was born: the drug trafficker. Alcohol prohibition in the U.S.A. (1920-1933) and the greater demand for alcohol compared to opiates, marijuana and cocaine, made alcohol smuggling much more profitable. Bootleggers were, by far, a larger, wealthier and more powerful group.
In Chicago, Al Capone, a cocaine user himself, and his group of outlaws became the prototype of the gangster, the entrepreneur of the underworld. He made investments in legal business and financial contributions to political campaigns. He bought policemen and politicians. He became a legend.
In Mexico, known and famous drug traffickers in the thirties such as Enrique Fernández, from Ciudad Juárez, were soon compared to Capone by the press. Interim governor (1929-1930) from Chihuahua, Luis León (Secretary of Agriculture under Calles government, and of Industry and Commerce under Ortíz Rubio) helped him get out of the Islas Marías prison. Some said Fernández had made pacts with politicians. Shootings among traffickers were Chicago style. The discourse on drug trafficking resembled that used during the alcohol prohibition.
María Dolores Estévez, known as "Lola la Chata", was the most important drug trafficker operating in Mexico City from the thirties to the fifties. Captain Luis Huesca de la Fuente, ex-chief of the Narcotics Police, was sent to jail, accused of having stolen the drug he seized and of having protected la "Chata". In Baja California, Dr. Bernardo Bátiz B., Delegate from the Health Department, suspected high ranking officials from the local government of protecting traffickers and sending them to prison only when they became greedy. In the forties, Max Cossman, associated to Harold "Happy" Meltzer - connected himself to Mickey Cohen, from the old Capone's band, who was living in California -, was accused for the murder of Enrique Diarte, an important opium trafficker operating in Tijuana and Mexicali. According to Harry Anslinger, Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, from the Luciano - Lansky group, and Virginia Hill negotiated with Mexican politicians to finance poppy culture in the Northwest part of the country. Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, indicted in Camarena's murder, began his trafficker career in the fifties. In the sixties, Eduardo Fernández, Pedro Avilés and Jorge Favela, were included in a large list of traffickers from Sinaloa mentioned in the press. In the post-war years, traffickers from Sinaloa became definitely the most important in the country. They began with opium smuggling, and continued with marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines, depending on the demand.
In the seventies, Pedro Avilés, Manuel Salcido Uzeta (the "Crazy Pig"), and especially Miguel Angel Félix Gallardo, were the most common names. Félix G. was born in the suburbs of Culiacán, Sinaloa's capital. He studied for a commercial career, but decided to work as a policeman. He was assigned to the governor's house where he became his family bodyguard. The governor of Sinaloa Leopoldo Sánchez Celis (1963-1968) was his godfather when he got married. According to the DEA, Félix G., associated to Ramón Matta Ballesteros, the Honduran contact with Colombians, became the number one cocaine trafficker in Mexico starting in the mid-seventies. He lived as a respectable and respected entrepreneur for many years. His relationship with ex-governor Sánchez Celis (some said he was his protector) facilitated his political and business contacts. He was a prominent counsellor of Somex bank (Chihuahua) in 1979, and a shareholder and distinguished client at the national level at least until 1982. In 1976 there was an arrest order against him in Tijuana, but nothing was done. The charges were heroin and cocaine trafficking. He was protected by an important narcotics official, said the DEA. Starting in 1971 he accumulated at least fourteen arrest orders. He did business for four more years after Camarena's murder. He was himself godfather of the governor's son (Rodolfo) at his marriage, a dangerous liaison that caused Rodolfo's assassination when he was about to visit his godfather in prison. He had been previously abducted at the Mexico City airport and tortured.
Like the Hydra, other heads appeared after one was cut, all of them emerging from the same root. Caro's brothers and relatives, Güero Palma and "Chapo" Guzmán, the Arellano Félix brothers, and Amado Carrillo, were important lieutenants on the waiting list or already leading their own groups in different parts of the territory. They were all Sinaloans of rural origin, except the Arellano brothers, who were urban, middle class, and with a higher education. The empire was divided but the new groups were not less powerful than the original despite their rivalries. The northeast was controlled by Juan García Abrego, a trafficker from Tamaulipas whose rise and fall followed the six-year political cycle and became, according to Mexican and U.S.A. authorities, the most important.
In 1993, Cardinal Jesús Posadas Ocampo and his driver were killed in a shooting as they arrived at the parking lot of the Guadalajara airport. Posadas was going to pick up Girolamo Prigione, the Vatican's representative in Mexico. The Attorney General, Jorge Carpizo, said that Arellano's gunmen had mistaken him for "Chapo" Guzmán because their cars were alike: same model, same colour. Guzmán, who was not very far from there with his people, repelled the attack and ran away under a rain of bullets. Minutes later, some gunmen and one of the Arellano brothers took a regular flight to Tijuana. The PGR could not explain why nobody tried to stop them. Guzmán was caught the next month and sent to Almoloya high security prison. The elder of the Arellanos, Francisco Rafael, was accused of illegal arms use, detained in Tijuana in December 1993 and imprisoned in Almoloya. Two of his brothers, Ramón and Benjamín, held secret meetings with Prigione in December 1993 and January 1994, gave him a letter for the Pope and told Prigione their version of the story. Benjamín said Posadas was perhaps mistaken for Ramón by Guzmán's gunmen. He added that while Ramón was in Prigione's house, the Vatican's representative telephoned president Salinas, went to his house (Los Pinos) and had a meeting with the president himself, the Secretary of Government and the Attorney General. The Arellano brothers were ready to surrender in exchange for an arrangement. Prigione said there would always be certain unrevealed aspects about Posadas' murder. The brothers did not accept that and decided to take a risk. The authorities did not clarify the situation. Marcos, the leader of the EZLN, has the "intuition" that Posadas was killed because he knew that some high ranking officials were implicated in the drug business, information he was about to tell to Prigione. In 1998, there are still important and influent clergy members, as well as numerous social groups nation-wide, who do not believe the "mistake" theory and are still waiting for a credible explanation.
Juan García Abrego was born in a ranch called "La Puerta", Matamoros, Tamaulipas. He did not finish primary school. He worked as a milkman and car thief before entering the drug business with the help of his uncle, the legendary smuggler Juan N. Guerra. One of his lieutenants, Prof. Oscar López Olivares, who became an FBI informer, said he taught him even basic distinction rules such as table manners, how to dress and the appropriate way to show his Rolex. During the Salinas government (1988-1994) he became the most important drug trafficker in Mexico. He smuggled tons of cocaine, from the Cali group, to the U.S.A. A key person in his career was PJF commander Guillermo González Calderoni. He led the team that killed Pablo Acosta, a big trafficker from Ojinaga, Chihuahua, in 1987. He arrested Jaime Herrera Nevares y Jaime Herrera Herrera in 1987, heroin traffickers from Durango, and his alleged "compadre" Miguel A. Félix Gallardo in 1989. According to an FBI infiltrated agent (SA 2620-OC) in García Abrego's group, González Calderoni was associated to García and protected him at least since 1986. Calderoni was accused of "unexplainable enrichment" in 1993. He escaped to the U.S.A. where he is at present in the protected witness program. When the Mexican government tried to extradite him, he revealed having done political espionage work for Raúl Salinas - the president´s brother -, who was suspected himself of having protected García Abrego. Raúl is now in Almoloya facing charges for "illicit enrichment" and for the murder of his ex-brother in law, José Francisco Ruiz Massieu, former president of the PRI. Swiss authorities have "frozen" more than $100 million in Swiss bank accounts belonging to Raúl under fake names. They suspect Raúl of money laundering for traffickers. Calderoni sent a warning: if the Mexican government insisted in extraditing him, he would "remember" more things.
García Abrego was captured in 1996 and immediately extradited to the U.S.A.. According to Janet Reno, the U.S.A. Attorney General, Mexican and U.S.A. officials agreed to say he was an American citizen, born in La Paloma, Texas. President Zedillo justified his decision in a private meeting with some congressmen, who leaked the information to the press. He said García Abrego was a very dangerous character who could set up a destabilising situation. The President's spokesman later denied he had ever said such a thing. In fact, the drug leader did not act as a desperado while he was being searched for. There were no bomb explosions or shootings against politicians or innocent people. There was no speculation attack against the peso, nor a flight of capital. A strange behaviour, indeed, for somebody whose fortune was officially estimated (in fact, invented) to 10 billion dollars (about 3.48% of Mexico's GNP in 1995, $5.7 billion less than the international reserves, and $1.6 billion more than the oil revenues the same year). His alleged destabilising power did not show up at all. The National Narcotics Intelligence Consumers Committee (NNICC) 1996 Report stated: "In Houston, García-Abrego was tried and convicted on 22 counts of drug trafficking, money laundering, and operating a continuing criminal enterprise. He received a sentence of eleven consecutive life terms in prison and was fined $128 million. García-Abregos's arrest and conviction, unfortunately, had little effect on cocaine trafficking into the United States, as elements of his organization remained intact. Moreover, any reduction in territory and influence suffered by the Garcia-Abrego organization was balanced by an increase in the power of the rival Carrillo-Fuentes organization".
In the eighties, Amado Carrillo ("The Lord of the Skyes"), another Sinaloan, Ernesto Fonseca's nephew according to Mexican authorities, was sent to Ojinaga, by the Félix Gallardo group, to work with Pablo Acosta. He was suspected of having paid González Calderoni to get Acosta out of his way. When García Abrego was extradited Carrillo took his place as number one on the official list. He smuggled tons of cocaine in big planes, his speciality. His group was based in Ciudad Juárez. The Arellano brothers tried to kill him once in a Mexico City restaurant (1993). His main problems began when General Jesús Gutiérrez Rebollo, the new chief of the National Institute of Drug Combat (INCD), was accused of protecting Carrillo for years. He was forced to move from one place to another. The police said he travelled to Russia, the Middle East, South America and the Caribbean. He went frequently to Las Vegas, undetected by the DEA. The Mossad paid no attention to him when he was in Jerusalem, neither did Cuban authorities when he was in their territory.
Mexican Military Intelligence service documents, dated January 14, 1997, stated that Carrillo did not want to give up since he wanted to make a pact with the government. He proposed to collaborate in counter-acting disorganized traffickers, stop drug sales in Mexico and direct them to the U.S.A. and Europe, help the country's economy with his dollars, avoid the use of violence, and act as an entrepreneur, and no longer as a criminal. He wanted freedom to run his business, tranquillity for his family, and 50% of his possessions. If his conditions were not satisfied, he would make his offer to other countries. For somebody who, according to the DEA, was the number one drug trafficker in the planet and chased world-wide, he was very successful in keeping himself invisible. His worst decision was to have plastic surgery in a Mexico City clinic to change his face and take off excessive fat in order to change his appearance. He died of post-surgery complications on July 4, 1997. After his death, the police said he had been trying to settle in Chile where he was buying property. He wanted to control drug trafficking without the mediation of Colombians and to expand his business to Australia. Carrillo's career makes him one of the most entrepreneurial and cosmopolite of all Mexican drug traffickers ever.
The Arellano brothers and their Tijuana based group, as well as some other of Carrillo's lieutenants started a new war for drug trafficking control along the U.S.A.-Mexico border and also in Jalisco. The FBI put Ramón Arellano on its top ten fugitive list on the Internet, and offered a fifty thousand dollars reward for information leading to his apprehension. Janet Reno offered a two million dollar reward for information about the brothers. The FBI informed that : "Ramon Eduardo Arellano-Felix ( born in 1964) has been charged in a sealed indictment in U.S.A. District Court, Southern District of California, with Conspiracy to Import Cocaine and Marijuana. Ramon Eduardo Arellano-Felix is believed to be one of the leaders of the Arellano-Felix Organization (AFO), which is also known as the Tijuana Cartel. The AFO is a drug gang known for their large distributions of controlled substances and propensity for violence in enforcement of the operation". The Mexican government sent the military to chase them in Tijuana, without success. Their fire power is assured by young gunmen from wealthy Tijuana families and from popular neighbourhoods in San Diego. The brothers have murdered important police officials and tried to kill in November 1997 an influential journalist in Tijuana, Jesús Blancornelas (he was seriously wounded), whose magazine Zeta has given information about their activities and protectors. Despite the incarceration of an important group of their lieutenants in Mexico and the U.S.A., the Arellano brothers are still free and running their business.
Conclusion
In Mexico, as in many other countries, drugs such as opiates, cocaine and marijuana were commonly used, generally for medical reasons, until the beginning of the twentieth century, when prohibition laws came into being. An eugenic discourse to protect the "race" was developed to convince the general public that the government was acting to preserve them from a danger of which they were not conscious. Health officials exaggerated the figures concerning drug addicts, repeating arguments heard in other countries that were based on speculation and not on scientific research. There was also a xenophobic argument in the anti-drug discourse. Government officials accused Chinese immigrants of having imported poppy plants and opium-use into Mexico. Most of the drug traffickers arrested in Mexico in the aftermath of the Harrison Narcotics Act were of Chinese origin. Chinese pogroms during the first three decades of the century reduced their possibilities of consolidating organizations.
Drug trafficking in Mexico began as a response to U.S.A. opium demand. Production areas and border cities were key places where a new social group emerged. The business was profitable enough to attract the interest of mighty politicians. People who tried autonomous strategies for smuggling did not last very long or just survived modestly. Big business needed official protection. Already at the start, drug traffickers depended upon other political economy players. Every time there was a drug scandal, governors from producer or border states were the first in line to be suspected of being involved. Information from Mexican and U.S.A. archives gives support to the idea that newspaper notes identifying northern governors were well-founded. In the logic of the post-revolutionary political system, governors' freedom to do any kind of business, legal or illegal, was limited by the president's will and their own ethical inclinations.
The power of the presidency, the monopoly of politics by the state party, the subordination of the legislative and judicial spheres to the executive, and the lack of organized political opposition, created the conditions for developing drug trafficking from within the power structure. Before the Second World War, not a single suspected governor was ever formally accused or investigated. However, in the aftermath of the war when disputes arose between elite political groups, the drug issue was used to damage a governor's image. Nothing was proved because there were no formal accusations, nor any investigation, just political negotiations. Suspicions remained in the public opinion.
Controlled, protected or tolerated by the political power, drug trafficking continued to function under a new scheme. New social agents were included in an official attempt to reduce drug production and trafficking. There were more players in every camp, and more money. Without any changes in the political system and a growing demand for drugs in the U.S.A., it seems that PJF and DFS agents, as well as the military who had more responsibilities in drug destruction campaigns, were simultaneously fighting to contain drug trafficking, helping smugglers supply the demand, controlling them to restrain their autonomy, and getting a share of the profits - all this in exchange for their mediation role between drug traffickers and the political power, their silence and their disposition to serve as scapegoats to protect their political masters. That mediation scheme was weakened when DEA agent Enrique Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers and police agents who were on their payroll. As a response to U.S.A. pressure, president De la Madrid dismantled the DFS, a very important political elite's protection shield. Mexican Governors and secretaries of state were accused by U.S.A. officials of being involved in Camarena's murder and drug trafficking. During the Cold War, the DFS espionage services were very useful for the U.S.A. government. For many years DFS illegal activities were never publicly criticised by the American government. U.S.A. drug policy and Camarena's murder changed the honeymoon. However, the PJF structure remained, and so did another important element of the mediation scheme.
The formation of the most important drug trafficking organizations in Mexico can be traced back to the 20s, when prohibition laws provoked an immediate response from poppy cultivators in north-western states, especially in Sinaloa. The region became the centre of drug business and a source of trafficking expertise, a know-how transmitted through generations. Born and raised among poppy and marijuana plants, some north-western peasants and people of urban origin with leadership capabilities were transformed into drug smuggling entrepreneurs (the Sinaloans, for example). The demand for their products, and the police and political protection, multiplied the number of producers in other regions. However, time in the business and expertise, and perhaps more solid and long-lasting political protection, were comparative advantages which made these dealers more powerful than others (a kind of oligopoly), even today and despite the alleged official support to a north-eastern organization (Juan García Abrego's) during president Salinas' administration.
An important poppy and marijuana producer, and a transit country for cocaine, Mexico's illegal drugs users figures are not very impressive when compared to those of the U.S.A., whose demand has usually been the main incentive for Mexican cultivators and traffickers. The two national surveys on addictions and CIJ data show changing and relative growing tendencies in drug use, specially in the most populated cities, producer regions and border cities. Supporting prevention and addiction treatment policies would help to curb the actual trends and keep them at a manageable level. National drug policy considers repression of drug trafficking a more important and urgent issue.
On both sides of the Mexico-U.S.A. border, a popular tradition mixing oral history and a certain style of music developed, starting in the nineteenth century: the corrido. These versified stories about a wide variety of events, usually written from a popular point of view, became a sort of people's newspaper. Drug traffickers' corridos had an immediate effect on the public of northern states when they appeared on the popular music market in the mid-70s. Prohibited for a long time, drug trafficking and traffickers were not perceived for many years as an interesting or legitimate subject for corrido composers, although there were exceptions to the rule. There used to be a certain composers' moral self-control, a conscious or unconscious refusal to talk of an illegal business, its history and social agents. In regions of cultivation, trafficking places and border cities, perceptions were transformed over the years. People learned to live with outlaws, who became a part of the "normal" life. Stories about traffickers told in corridos were also stories of conventional society which simultaneously criticised their criminal behaviour and tolerated their economic and social integration. Traffickers' corridos succeeded when the "normalisation" process was in the stage of consolidation. Economic fortunes, legal entrepreneurial activities, and political relations were elements of social respectability that could be achieved by illegal means. These social transmutations were visible to many people. Traffickers' corridos reproduced parts of this process in a direct and simple language.
According to common sense perception, drug traffickers in Mexico have become so powerful that they have "penetrated" the protective shield of official institutions whose purpose is to fight them. Historical research in the Mexican case does not support the assumption of two separate fields: drug trafficking and its agents, on one side, and the State on the other. Moreover, since the beginning of prohibition, the illegal trade appeared related to powerful political agents in the production and trafficking regions. Cultivators and wholesale smugglers were not autonomous players; their success depended on political protection. They did not buy politicians; rather, politicians obliged them to pay a sort of "tax". If they didn't pay, their business was over. The power was on the political side. Politicians decided who, when, where and how. Drug trafficking was supported from within the power structure. How could drug traffickers have penetrated a political structure that created and protected them, a political structure they were subordinated to? They were its creatures.
The strategies of political control on drug trafficking have changed throughout the years. Before the 1940s, governors of producing and trafficking states had the power to control illegal business in their territories. After 1947, anti-drug agents and the military had direct responsibility in fighting traffickers and the possibility of being institutional mediators between traffickers and political power. Neither traffickers nor mediators were autonomous: they were both subordinated to political power. The cracking down of the ancient regime has provoked cascade effects on the different levels of the power structure pyramid. Lethal disputes among the state party political families have disrupted the mechanisms of political control over institutional mediations between traffickers and political power. Institutional mediators (police and military) and traffickers can now be more autonomous than ever and capable of playing for their own interests. A political pact for a democratic transition would help to prevent the negative effects of a collapsing system and increase the probabilities for keeping the social control, under different conditions, of drug trafficking, considering the realistic impossibility of eradicating drugs from the planet and stopping once and forever the curiosity and appetite of human beings for mind-altering substances.

Occupation? Racist!
I came across this amazing video today.
It was uploaded on youtube on the 07th April 2011.
2 minutes into watching this, it occurred to me that I have never seen the like of this on my TV screen or in the news. Yes I see in France, "Ban the hijab" I see in UK a black school boy going to court because his school does not allow his cornrows hairstyle.
This side of Israel is never revealed to us in the media.
Yet in today's news, a French activist was charged with "Anti-semitism" because she protested in a shop to "Boycott Israel" Her name is Olivia Zemor and she even brought a Holocaust survivor as a character witness to say that what she did was right. And she is NOT "Anti-Semitic"
The Holocaust survivors name is Hajo Meyer. He is part of the International network of Anti-Zionist Jews.
“The challenge today is to know what degree of independence is the foreign justice able to have related to the French government, how long will it go on with blackmailing people with the accusation of anti-Semitism,” said Zemor.
"This is not against any person or group of persons because of belonging to the Israeli nation," Zemor told the court
I have diverted off the main, but we are still in Europe
I have not been a blogger for long, and still haven't taken the time out to find why Israel are part of the EU.
Statistics have recently come up that lots of Israeli's have been applying for Europeon passports as they are able to, as many had come from Europe. And historically it is their right!
So they are part of the EU (If I research this, I will be accused of something, but I really don't care as I know they are not in Europe)
As EU citizens they are required to take refugees. It's a requirement that buys into the IMF guarantee of the lucky dip.
Interestingly enough and off the beaten track .. I was looking at Iraq's refugee's
and found a site called "Rescue-UK" where it quoted,
"Resettlement is an opportunity for European people and their governments to make a lasting difference in the lives of thousands of vulnerable children, women and men who will never be able to go home. Europe can offer them protection and a better future."
Israel would obviously not take displaced Muslim's from Arab countries.
So the countries that Bomb these people's countries also dictates to other countries who takes them in. A small minority "make the grade," that's what it looks like to me.
Especially, when UK dictates terms for themselves, that the other EU countries don't stipulate. (Or it's just not on their specification!) http://www.rescue-uk.org/fileadmin/user_upload/Reports/10_000_Refugees_from_Iraq_-_Joint_Resettlement_in_the_EU_-_ICMC_IRC_report_May_2010_-_Final.pdf
Page 25
In 2007, the government began to resettle Iraqis that
were formally locally employed (LE) with the British
Armed Forces or civilian missions, 69 in total. In 2008,
the UK pledged that two-thirds of the 750 annual places would be reserved for Iraqis; in the same year 307
Iraqis arrived. In 2009, 81 Palestinians (ex-Iraq) coming from Syrian/Iraqi border camps were selected from the
Emergency Transit Centre (ETC) in Romania
If you look at UK's requirements, it does not look like any other EU country have the same specifications in assisting refugees. Although France looks more militant in stipulating certain requirements.
OK back to Israel.. And the video is called "South Tel Aviv is on Fire"
Yes Gosh !! They are racist.. but we can find that anywhere.
Yet look again, and think of Olivia Zemor in France peacefully demonstrating.
NOT calling anyone a "Thief" "Rapist" and definitely not telling anyone to "Go Home!!"
These racists Jews did not make headlines. They did not get taken to court and sued for the defamation of character.. They were not even arrested for "disturbing the peace"
I was going to say something silly like "Don't they have discrimination laws as part of the EU community?" but of course they do, It does not apply to these people in the video as they probably will say "We don't need laws. We are Gods chosen people!"
First They Came...

Israeli Checkpoints
In The West Bank
These checkpoints are NOT between Israel and Palestine, but they seperate Palestinian villages and towns from each other and from the roads that connect them. One of the things to consider is the impact of checkpoints on health and health care access. As you can imagine, it is a disaster for both critical, acute care as well as primary, preventative care. You can be waiting for hours before they decide whether or not you are allowed to pass.

There are both permanent checkpoints as well as "flying checkpoints". Permanent checkpoints are well established structures that most often have people sitting in watchtowers, even when the checkpoints are not open and people can't pass. The photo shows Qalqiliya check point outside Jerusalem. Non Jews have to pass through these corridors to show your ID and to have yourself and your obags scanned.
Flying checkpoints move from place to place and there are many, many of them. In this pictures, you can see a flying checkpoint on the only road that connects two Palestinian villages that were separated by the wall-Qalqiliya and Habla. The soldier is checking IDs and trunks of cars.
Cheap Meat,
MSRA And Deadly Greed
Here is a news story that could determine whether you live or die. Many of the world's scientists are warning that one of the mightiest weapons doctors have against sickness is being rendered useless – so a few people can get richer, for a while. If they aren't stopped soon, the World Health Organisation warns we are facing "a doomsday scenario of a world without antibiotics". It will be a world where transplant surgery is impossible. It will be a world where a simple appendix operation will be as routinely lethal as it was in 1927, before the discovery of penicillin. It will be a world where pneumonia and TB and gonorrhea are far harder to deal with, and claim many more of us. But it's a world that you and I don't have to see – if we act on this warning now.
As the scientists I've interviewed explain it, antibiotics do something simple. They kill, slow down or stall the growth of bacteria. They were one of the great advances of the 20th century, and they have saved millions of us. But they inherently contain a problem – one that was known about from very early on. They start an arms race. Use an antibiotic against bacteria, and it kills most of it – but it can also prompt the bacteria to evolve a tougher, stronger, meaner strain that can fight back. The bacteria is constantly mutating and dividing. The stronger the antibiotic, the stronger some bacteria will become to survive. It's Darwin dancing at super-speed.
So the more we use antibiotics, the more we lose them. It's a battle played out on human bodies and in human wounds, with sky-high stakes. In many developed countries today, MRSA kills more people than Aids. The obvious conclusion, then, is that we should use antibiotics sparingly, and only when they are really needed to treat the sick. But in one crucial area we are doing the exact opposite – for the sake of a few people's profits.
In the United States, Latin America, and Asia, animals being farmed for meat and milk are being automatically given antibiotics in their food all day – irrespective of whether they are healthy or sick. It's like slathering your child's Cornflakes with antibiotics, all year round. Some 80 per cent of all antibiotics in the US go straight into farm animals. This speeds up the race massively. It's like taking bacteria to the gym and giving them a constant work-out – and then unleashing them on the rest of us.
You can see how this process makes bacteria stronger and tougher – and at work on humans – in a startling study by Professor Barry Levy in the New England Journal of Medicine. His team went to a chicken farm where antibiotics had not been used before, and started to put the antibiotic tetracycline into their feed. Before the start of the experiment, there was no tetracycline-resistant bacteria on the farm. Within two weeks, 90 per cent of the chickens were excreting tetracycline-resistant organisms. Even more strikingly, half of all the humans living on the farm were by then excreting tetracycline-resistant bacteria too.
This process partially explains the evolution and spread of many superbugs. Only a fortnight ago, a new strain of MRSA was found in British milk that could be transmitted to human beings. To some degree this arms race is an inevitable part of nature – but our factory farms are massively artificially accelerating it. They are bringing the day when antibiotics won't work much closer.
Why? Why would factory farms automatically feed antibiotics to healthy animals, given the obvious risk? If you cram animals together, give them little room to move, and make them grow and produce far beyond the level they would in natural circumstances, they will routinely get ill – and they do. It is cheaper for their owners to simply automatically and pre-emptively drug them all, than to try to treat their illness individually, or to create an environment where sickness is not standard.
The animals in these factory farms can become reservoirs of stronger superbugs. Sometimes it spreads to us through contamination of raw meat, but more often it filters out through workers who have contact with the animals. Dutch pig farmers are 760 times more likely to be carrying pig-MRSA than the rest of the population. This story ends eventually with the death of antibiotics – and routine operations becoming deadly once more.
We always knew factory farming was a scar on our conscience, but it turns out it is also an urgent threat to our health. Of course, factory farming is not the only source of growing antibiotic resistance. Doctors have been overprescribing them, and patients have too often not been taking their full course, enabling tougher bacteria to survive and thrive. But this is the most egregious cause.
A few years ago, it looked like the European Union had taken the lead, by banning the routine use of some types of antibiotics simply to promote the growth of animals. But research published this week by the Soil Association suggests farmers are sidestepping the real issue. The prescription of modern cephalosporins, the antibiotics which are most widely believed to promote stronger variants of MRSA in animals and humans – has quadrupled in the past decade in Britain. Why? They are advertised to farmers, who are under greater pressure than ever to get more and more out of their herds because supermarkets have ratcheted up the pressure for quick profit. Decent small farmers who want to resist these trends find themselves out of business.
The former chief medical officer Liam Donaldson says this over-prescription is so dangerous to us all it should be banned. Yet David Cameron's Government ignored the official recommendation from its own veterinary advisers to take even the much milder step of banning the advertising of antibiotics to farmers.
It might seem strange that governments all over the world are taking such a gamble with public health, in the face of the best scientific advice. But Big Agriculture has armies of lobbyists and open chequebooks, while the people trying to protect the public have only the facts and reason and truth on their side. The squandering of life-saving antibiotics is one example of a bigger trend hijacking global politics. Small groups of rich people, determined to maximise profits, are buying or bamboozling politicians into serving their interests and into ignoring the interests of the vast majority of the population. This is the trend that is making it so hard to (say) reregulate the banks to prevent another global crash, or prevent the unravelling of the climate.
It doesn't have to be this way. The majority of the population can organise and shout louder than these self-interested juntas of profit. There are inspiring examples. In Lincolnshire, there were plans to import the first US-style mega-farm into this country by a group of tycoons who claimed their cows "do not belong in fields". But public pressure forced the Environment Agency to investigate, and the plans to be abandoned. Fighting back on issues like this works – and we need to step it up.
Otherwise, the history books – written by people more vulnerable to bacteria than you and I have ever been – will record something startling. Our demand for cheap meat turned us, in turn, into cheap meat.

The West's Obscene
Demonisation Of Ghadaffi
By Glenn FordThe vilification campaign waged by the West against Moammar Gaddfi is just the latest chapter in a "massive U.S. psychological assault, a vast disinformation operation in which the corporate media act as megaphones for government liars." In reality, there is no evidence for allegations that Gaddafi ordered his soldiers to rape hundreds of women, but "that does not seem to matter to a corporate media that are bent on glorifying the Benghazi-based rebels."
"There is not one bit of hard evidence that mass rapes have occurred."
The slander campaign against Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi has reached way beyond the realm of the ridiculous, and can only be described as obscene. We are now supposed to believe that Colonel Gaddafi, himself, ordered his soldiers to rape hundreds of women. There is not one bit of hard evidence that such mass rapes have occurred, but that does not seem to matter to a corporate media that are bent on glorifying the Benghazi-based rebels and demonizing Gaddafi and his soldiers. Amnesty International, an organization that is decidedly hostile to Gaddafi’s government, admits that it cannot find evidence of mass rapes by the Libyan armed forces. And the man in charge of the United Nations’ human rights investigation in Libya told journalists that "massive hysteria" was behind the rape charge. Nevertheless, the western media repeat the baseless allegations ad nauseam, like young boys telling dirty stories.
The International Criminal Court, which specializes in prosecuting Africans who get on the wrong side of the United States, speaks vaguely of being in possession of evidence, but it turns out that the allegations come from one Libyan woman, who claims that she sent out inquiries about sexual assaults to 70,000 women, that 60,000 of them responded, and 259 reported they had been abused. But when investigators asked this solitary source to show them the questionnaires, as investigative reporter Russ Baker tells us, she could not produce the evidence. And it is a mystery how she could have mailed out and gotten back tens of thousands of questionnaires, when Libya’s postal system had been shut down by the war.
"The western media repeat the baseless allegations ad nauseam, like young boys telling dirty stories."
This war was launched on the basis of an imaginary massacre of Libyan civilians by Gaddafi’s forces – which, of course, never happened – and is now fueled by a campaign of demonization and a depraved indifference to the truth.
Certainly since 2001, the world has been subjected to a massive U.S. psychological assault, a vast disinformation operation in which the corporate media act as megaphones for government liars.
The invasion of Iraq was launched by lies about weapons of mass destruction. When the lies fell apart, American politicians justified the war by saying it was worth it to get rid of the monster, Saddam Hussein. Saddam was so thoroughly demonized that any amount of maiming and death would be acceptable to erase him from the scene. If Saddam Hussein was the Devil, himself, then there could be no limits on military efforts to eliminate him. Now, the same kind of dehumanizing psychological offensive is directed at Moammar Gaddafi, who is depicted in comic-book style as a puppet master of mass rape, so that whatever death and destruction is rained down on Libya by NATO, it will have been "worth it." This is a profoundly dangerous way for a superpower to behave. It fills the population with a bloodlust that cannot be easily controlled. The U.S. government, with plenty of help from the media, is telling Americans that those who oppose U.S. policies in the world are savages. That's what the white settlers said about the Indians, and we know how that ended.

Palestinian Children
Targeted As Israel Crushes Unrest
By Mel Frykberg
Last month Ahmed was pulled out of his bed at 4am by Israeli security forces led by Shin Bet agents from Israel’s domestic intelligence agency. He was taken to the Russian Compound police station in West Jerusalem where he was accused of throwing stones at Israeli soldiers and police during clashes with Palestinian youth in the volatile neighbourhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem.
Silwan has become a regular point of friction and violent confrontation between illegal Israeli settlers, the Israeli soldiers and police who protect them, and Palestinian youngsters.
Hundreds of Palestinians have been driven out of their homes in East Jerusalem to make way for the Israeli settlers. Many Palestinian homes have been destroyed, and dozens more are under threat, as the Israeli authorities move Israeli settlers in - all this illegal under international law.
When the soldiers first arrived Ahmed’s father Daoud at first refused to open the door and demanded that the police produce a search or arrest warrant.
"But they threatened to break the door down if I didn’t open it. They asked me where Ahmed was and I asked them why they wanted him. They told me to shut up and assaulted me," Daoud told IPS.
"They then went to Ahmed’s bedroom and dragged him out and into a police vehicle outside. They would not tell me where they were taking him and physically prevented me from accompanying Ahmed.
"The next morning after many frantic telephone enquiries I found out Ahmed was being held at the Russian Compound. When I went there they wouldn’t let me see my son and denied he was even there. Eventually after I called my lawyer I was able to see him several hours later. He looked very traumatised and was crying," recalls Daoud.
"I was scared. I couldn’t see where we were going and my hands were handcuffed very tightly behind my back. At the police station they refused to give me water when I told them I was thirsty and when I asked to go to the toilet they kicked me. They questioned me for hours and accused me of throwing stones which I denied," Ahmed told IPS.
Two weeks ago Ahmed’s cousin, Ali Siyam, 7, was arrested under similar circumstances and also accused of stone throwing. When his father Muhammad tried to stop the dozens of Israeli security men from dragging his son away, he was beaten with the backs of guns on his head and subsequently required hospital treatment.
Ali’s aunt was shot in the leg with a rubber-coated steel bullet when she tried to intervene and she too required hospital treatment. Ali’s parents were forbidden from accompanying their son to the police station and when they went to the Russian Compound the police denied that Ali was in their custody.
When Ali’s Israeli lawyer Lea Tzemel tried to visit her young client in jail the security guards refused to allow her in. When she tried to walk past the guards she was detained. Following an argument she was granted access to the boy. Ali was released several hours later.
Meanwhile, Ahmed was initially ordered to a month’s house arrest and forbidden from attending school as the police investigation continued. He is due to appear in court next month on charges of stone throwing. Whether he is guilty or not remains questionable as does Israel’s interrogation techniques of young Palestinian children.
Defence International for Children (DCI) - Palestine Chapter, reports that Israeli police opened 1,267 criminal cases against Palestinian children between November 2009 and October 2010 for stone throwing in East Jerusalem. Israeli rights group B’tselem reports 31 of those children were from Silwan.
"Fifty percent of the children were interrogated without their parents or a lawyer present and many were threatened and assaulted," Gerard Horton, a lawyer from DCI, told IPS.
"Many of the children were screamed at, slapped and shoved, sometimes kicked and punched, during questioning and coerced into making statements of disputable accuracy. Some were threatened with further violence," said Horton.
"These kids had been taken from their homes in the middle of the night, many handcuffed and blindfolded," Horton said. "They were then interrogated hours later and by this time they were traumatised and disoriented, and not able to withstand the pressure."
The situation of Palestinian children in the West Bank is even worse where they are subject to military law. Minors can be held for up to eight days before they are brought before a military judge.
"We had one case where three kids were tasered while their hands were tied behind their backs by Israeli police during questioning on one of the settlements. Others were threatened with having their homes blown up, and several threatened with rape," Horton told IPS.
More than 25 Palestinian children have been arrested in Silwan during the last few weeks.
Milad Ayyash, 17, was shot dead in May by an Israeli settler security guard who claimed the boy had been involved in clashes.
Last year a video showing an Israeli settler from Silwan deliberately veering towards, and driving into a young Palestinian boy, who was allegedly throwing stones, caused outrage when an Israeli motor company used the video in an advertisement to promote the car’s endurance. The boy was hospitalised for fractures and subsequently arrested. No charges were brought against the driver.
Kucinich To Clinton
Africa is Not an Imperial Holding of the United States
This material was copied from the web site of US Congressman Dennis Kucinich.
Washington, Jun 13 -
Congressman Dennis Kucinich, author of a blueprint for self-determination and peace in Libya, today responded to reports, such as those in The New York Times, that Secretary of State Hilary Clinton urged African leaders to isolate the Gaddafi regime and to work with the Libyan rebels.
“There is a difference between diplomacy and threats. Africa is not an imperial holding of the United States; Africa should be left to make its own decisions about its dealings with Libya without undue pressure from the United States. Such heavy-handed pressure from the Secretary of State appears to be in response to efforts by the African Union to facilitate a peace deal to end the war in Libya.
“The United States’ strategic and diplomatic interests would be best advanced by finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Libya, not by threatening legitimate peace-seeking efforts,” said Kucinich.
See Rep. Kucinich Blueprint for Self-Determination and Peace in Libya here.
Gaza's Gas Wealth
Kept From Palestine

Estimated to be worth at least $4 billion, gas deposits off Palestine’s territorial waters are being targeted by international corporations and the Israeli government.
Currently the 1.5 trillion cubic feet of estimated reserves are split between British Gas (60 percent), the Lebanese Consolidated Contractors (30 percent) and the Palestinian Authority (10 percent). Following Egypt’s withdrawal of their gas supplies following the end of Hosni Mubarak’s military rule and his previous cheap price for Israel, President Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet began a concerted effort to keep the gas flowing to Israel rather than sold at fair market price to generate corporate profits and revenue for the now unified Palestinian government.
Netanyahu asked Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to resume negotiations on the sale of gas to Israel. National Infrastructure Ministry successfully negotiated with US oil firm Noble Energy to guarantee any gas pumped offshore wouldn’t flow into the partly Palestinian-controlled Gaza Marine operation. While the majority of the reserve lies in Palestinian territorial waters, Israel’s adjacent offshore rigs are quickly being developed to pick up the slack of Egypt until the large Leviathan and Tamar gas fields off of Haifa are operational.
Noble Energy is currently shipping a fifth oil rig to join its fleet operating in Israeli territorial waters.
Michel Chossudovsky, an economist with the Global Research group, wrote that Palestine’s relatively small population would greatly benefit from such a surge of natural resource wealth – perhaps enabling the nascent nation to achieve Gulf State-style gross domestic product.
Sixty percent of the known gas reserves off the Gazan/Israeli coast lies in Palestinian territorial waters.
When Israel was planning it’s 2008 invasion of Gaza, it reportedly sped up negotiations with Nobel to cement them before the chaos of war.
"It is only reasonable to suppose that the intention to appropriate these limited resources, either by Israel alone or together with the collaborationist Palestinian Authority, is the motive for preventing Gazan fishing boats from entering Gaza’s territorial waters," wrote Noam Chomskyin forthcoming book Hopes and Prospects.

"Every war sold on a media lie"
We Don't Torture

By Stephen Soldz, 15 June 2011
Those of us who opposed the Bush administration torture program have been demoralized by the lack of accountability for the numerous abuses committed as part of that program. President Obama decried torture, and said he would end it, but he also said he wanted to "look forward, not back," apparently precluding investigations of the abuses committed by the previous administration.
The Obama administration has not merely refused to initiate criminal investigations of those who approved and ordered the Bush-Cheney torture program. They have declined even to support a Commission of Inquiry to explore what happened in a non-judicial forum. Further, the administration used every legal tool available including spurious arguments about national security in US courts and diplomatic pressure on foreign governments to stymie efforts at accountability through ethics complaints, domestic civil trials, and foreign criminal cases for the crimes committed by predecessors.
Over the last few years, as one avenue of accountability after another was closed, it looked as if the torture program would be protected as carefully by the Obama administration as it was by the Bush administration. The result, many feared, was that torture would remain an available tool of the state, to be dragged out by future administrations who could cite the lack of accountability for Bush torture by a Democratic administration as evidence of a bipartisan consensus that torture really isn't that bad. Many human rights experts have argued that future courts, too, could view the current lack of accountability as a legal precedent, potentially further shielding future torturers.
The one avenue for accountability that wasn't closed by the Obama administration was the investigation by Department of Justice prosecutor John Durham. Durham, readers may recall, was the Federal prosecutor originally tasked to investigate the destruction of CIA interrogation videotapes in apparent violation of a court order. In 2009 Attorney General Eric Holder expanded Durham's mandate to include investigating incidents of detainee treatment that went beyond even those actions approved under the so-called "torture memos" of the Bush Justice Department.
Durham's expanded investigation has dragged on for two years with little visibility, except for his declaration in January that he would not indict anyone for the destruction of the interrogation videotapes. Many in the human rights community took the lack of indictments in the tapes case as an indication that Durham would ultimately decline to prosecute anyone, thus closing yet another avenue for possible accountability.
The pro-torture party of former Bush officials and right-wing pundits who defended the "enhanced interrogation" torture program at every opportunity did not appear as convinced as human rights advocates that Durham's investigation would ultimately turn into a paper tiger. In the aftermath of the Bin Laden raid, they repeatedly harped on two issues. First, they vociferously claimed, using patently absurd arguments, that Bin Laden's death showed that torture "worked." Second, they frantically demanded that Durham's investigation be called off.
It now appears that the pro-torture party may have recognized the implications of Durham's investigation better than did most human rights advocates. On Monday, Adam Zagorin reported in TIME that Durham was in the process of actively investigating the murder of Manadel al-Jamadi, the Iraqi general whose frozen, brutally abused body appeared in the Abu Ghraib photographs. While al-Jamadi's death had earlier been ruled a homicide, the Justice Department had taken no action. But Zagorin reports that Durham is now presenting evidence to a grand jury on the Jamadi case. And he apparently has his eyes on a possible perpetrator:
Perhaps most important, according to someone familiar with the investigation, Durham and FBI agents have said the probe's focus involves "a specific civilian person." Durham didn't name names, but those close to the case believe that person is Mark Swanner, a non-covert CIA interrogator and polygraph expert who questioned al-Jamadi immediately before his death.
Also important is that Zagorin has a copy of a subpoena from the investigation that suggests that Durham may be looking beyond al-Jamadi:
TIME has obtained a copy of a subpoena signed by Durham that points to his grand jury's broader mandate, which could involve charging additional CIA officers and contract employees in other cases. The subpoena says "the grand jury is conducting an investigation of possible violations of federal criminal laws involving War Crimes (18 USC/2441), Torture (18 USC 243OA) and related federal offenses."
Thus, this investigation may be the beginning of a broader investigation of "CIA officers and contract employees." One wonders if the CIA's torture psychologist contractors James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen may be among Durham's targets. This seems plausible since -- based on later torture memos -- their waterboarding and other "enhanced interrogation" tactics went, well beyond those authorized at the time in their intensity and longevity, providing potential liability under Durham's mandate.
If Mitchell and Jessen are indeed targets, that could well explain the near panic of the torture defenders when they refer to the Durham investigation. These former officials and their apologists may be worried that an investigation into the actions of Mitchell and Jessen will go higher up the chain of command. Reportedly, everything done in the secret CIA prisons was approved in Washington, sometimes even in the White House. And, as Watergate demonstrated, investigations, once started, can sometimes climb the command chain to the very top.
There are no certainties in human rights work. But this latest news about Durham's investigation is a rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak picture of continued abuses and absent accountability. It now appears possible that we might have some torture accountability after all.

Colonel Gaddafi's eldest son has been officially allocated hundreds of Olympic tickets to the 2012 London games.
The Libyan regime has successfully requested close to 1,000 tickets to events at the London Olympics and the country’s attendance at the Games is being co-ordinated by the Gaddafi family.
The Libyan Olympic Committee is headed by Muhammad Gaddafi and the British Government now fears a major diplomatic embarrassment over the attendance of regime figures.
The decision to grant Libya the valuable tickets will infuriate the million Britons who have missed out on attending over-subscribed events.
Government sources warned of a diplomatic crisis last night after it emerged that Col Gaddafi himself may try to disrupt the event as a publicity coup if he remains in power in 2012.
The organisers of the London Games were obliged to sell Libya tickets, after the International Olympic Committee failed to expel Libya.
