Adios Richard
Richard Prior, comedian from Peoria, Illinois, just died from heart attack at 65. I knew his aunt Maxine. She was a whore house madam in nearby Bloomington, Illinois, where I was a compatriate rather than customer. Her profession kept her in the background of the community. But from there, she was a voice, one which helped organize and supported the movement. She had to send arriving customers around to the back door during our living room discussions. I never figured out if that was to protect us from being seen by them or the other way around. Her nephew helped too. He gave courage to black people by bringing racism to the surface as he led the way in telling white people what they didn't want to hear, getting away with that by doing it in such fashion they paid him for it.# posted by furtherleft @ 12/10/2005 11:25:00 PM
